York Preparatory School York Preparatory School

The school was originally chartered in 1896 as a branch of the New York Preparatory, but was not established until 1969, where it opened at 116 E. 85th St.; it relocated to its present site in 1997. Mr. Stewart, an Oxford-educated Englishman, has been the school's only headmaster. Enrolling pupils from throughout the Metropolitan New York City area, York Prep offers a traditional academic program that emphasizes college preparation. The school's tracking system places every student in one of several ability groups maintained in each discipline, thus enabling pupils to learn with others of similar skill and ability levels. The curriculum features electives in most fields, as well as several Advanced Placement courses and AP examination preparation in additional subjects. The Scholars Program, a three-year sequence that leads to an honors diploma, invites selected students to attend twice-weekly seminars on topics not covered in the standard curriculum. The school also allows qualified pupils to participate in independent study. Faculty utilize York's Upper West Side location by incorporating available cultural and recreational opportunities into their curricula. Boys and girls in grades 9-12 satisfy a 25-hour community service requirement each year.
