Vientiane International School
Phonsavanh Rd, PO Box 3180, Vientiane, Laos
Offering a small-class setting in an English-language environment, the school serves expatriate and local children who are interested in an international program. Although the greatest numbers of pupils come from the US, Laos, Germany, Korea and Australia, no one nationality dominates the student body. VIS comprises four sections: preschool, elementary (grades K-5), middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) The developmentally oriented preschool prepares children for an elementary program in which they develop intellect, creativity, independence and responsibility, and gain an appreciation of the local culture. During these years, the curriculum features two weekly art, music, French and physical education classes, all of which specialists teach. For middle schoolers, writing skills development is an important aspect of the English program, while science classes focus on hands-on activities and use of the scientific method. French instruction at the middle school level increases to three periods weekly. In addition to field trips to local markets, museums, temples, businesses, organizations and events, students in grades 6-12 embark on longer (overnight or weeklong) excursions to environmentally or historically significant sites outside of the city.
