Valley School of Ligonier
PO Box 616, Ligonier, PA 15658
Established by Constance Prosser Mellon Gen. Richard King Mellon, Valley provided a country day elementary program for a first-year student body that consisted of 43 children. Mrs. Mellon sought to maintain a small-class learning environment and a moderate tuition level. Originally housed in the former residence of William C. Carnegie, the school has renovated and expanded its facilities over the years to better serve its student body. The curriculum is traditional, with an emphasis on the development of basic skills. Art, music, computers, language, physical education and science are included in the curriculum at all grade levels, and computers are located in all classrooms. Spanish instruction begins in kindergarten, and Latin is added in grade 6. Interscholastic athletic competition begins in grade 5. Outdoor education and recreation periods make use of the 400-acre campus of woods and streams.
