Dating back to its inception, this school has conducted a country day school program that features a strong college preparatory curriculum. The Shaker Heights campus on Brantley Road has been occupied since 1926 and now enrolls children in grades K-8. US added the Hunting Valley upper school campus (grades 9-12) in 1970. The elementary school curriculum, which evolved out of an intensive study of the developmental patterns of very young boys, develops and coordinates skills in individual and group research projects. The college preparatory upper school features Advanced Placement courses in most disciplines and a wide range of electives. Liberal arts studies offer breadth of subject and approach, and there is frequent consideration of big ideas. Advanced physics and chemistry courses are offered through Kenyon College. Fellowship programs allow talented students to pursue independent study, research and creative writing projects. US organizes school year and summer trips to Costa Rica, France, Honduras, Italy and Spain, and conducts regular student and teacher exchanges with schools in China. The Entrepreneur Institute arranges apprenticeships and hosts guest speakers. Students of all ages regularly use the 221-acre campus for projects, field studies in science, and other outdoor activities. Upper schoolers accumulate 40 hours of required community service during their four years.
