United Nations International School

24-50 FDR Dr, New York, NY 10010

Although it gives admission preference to United Nations families, UNIS also serves members of the local and international communities who are interested in a global education. The school prepares its students through the International Baccalaureate and US examinations for entrance to universities here and, to a lesser degree, abroad. Over the years, IB students have been granted advanced standing of up to one year at many US colleges. In addition to following a rigorous program of study in the liberal arts and sciences, students may specialize in music or art. The school has approximately 120 nationalities represented in its enrollment, and more than 65 nationalities among its faculty and staff. English is the principal language of instruction, but students may enter without previous knowledge of the language. The curriculum includes eight foreign language options, as well as after-school mother tongue language programs for native speakers who need to work on reading and writing skills. In addition to the Manhattan campus, which overlooks the East River, the school maintains a second campus for children in grades K-8 in Jamaica Estates, a residential section of Queens. An outdoor education program heightens awareness of environmental concerns through trips to the Delaware River and the Catskill Mountains. Students organize an annual UNIS/UN Conference, held at the UN General Assembly, on a topic of current global importance. Boys and girls perform 30 hours of required community service annually in grades 9 and 10, then accumulate 50 total hours of service during their junior and senior years.
