Tokyo International School
3-4-22 Mita, Minato-ku, Tokyo, 108-0073 Japan
Founded as a preschool by international parents, TIS added an elementary school division three years after the founding. With its student body representative of more than 40 countries, the school employs English as its language of instruction. Boys and girls receive Japanese as a Second Language instruction three to four times per week. Children may enter the preschool with limited or nonexistent English skills, but at least one of each such child’s parents must be fluent in English. The hands-on preschool curriculum incorporates elements from approaches in the US, England, Canada and Australia, while the traditional elementary program consists of the following main subject areas: language arts; social sciences; math and science; visual arts; music and drama; technology; and physical education. Technology plays an important role in TIS' curriculum at all grade levels. The school maintains one mobile computer lab per grade in kindergarten through grade 5. In grades 6-8, students engage in a one-to-one laptop program.
