Tohoku International School
7-101-1 Yakarta, Izumi-ku, Sendai, Miyagi, 981-3214 Japan
With origins dating back to the 1950s, the school was reestablished in its present form in 1989. Maintaining a low student-teacher ratio at all grade levels, TIS provides an American-based curriculum in an English-language setting. The experiential preschool program precedes elementary and middle school instruction in the traditional subject areas and in Japanese language, art, music and cultural enrichment. High schoolers follow a typical college preparatory program that enables pupils to take Japanese courses through the School Festina's International Program. Students accumulate 20 hours of community service in grades 9-12. TIS operates a language institute for middle and high school pupils who lack English proficiency, thereby allowing students to develop their language skills enough to participate fully in academics and school life. Field trips, which consist of exchange days with nearby Japanese schools and hiking, skiing and museum excursions, augment classroom instruction and promote a greater understanding of Japanese culture.
