The Webb Schools
1175 W Baseline Rd, Claremont, CA 91711
The school comprises Webb School of California for boys and Vivian Webb School for girls. The former was started in 1922, when Dr. Thompson and Vivian Webb moved west from Bell Buckle, TN, to Claremont to found a boys' school in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Thompson Webb was part of a school-making tradition that had been started by his father, Sawney Webb, in Tennessee. Sawney Webb founded Webb School of Bell Buckle after the Civil War and helped it earn a national reputation based on its academic excellence and student honor code. Thompson took his father's principles to California when he founded the Webb School of California. In 1981, Vivian Webb School, a separate day school for girls, opened on the 75-acre campus and, four years later, began accepting boarding students. The Webb Schools share faculty and facilities, while maintaining their own student governments, school traditions and graduation ceremonies. Students in grades 9 and 10 take single-gender courses in math, science, history and English, while juniors and seniors attend coeducational classes. The two schools come together for meals, social and recreational activities, fine arts productions and other campuswide events. Advanced Placement and honors courses are offered in all major disciplines, and upperclassmen with faculty approval may attend classes at one of the nearby Claremont colleges. The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, the only accredited paleontology museum in the country located on a secondary school campus, enables students to learn about paleontology and the scientific method. Museum-associated activities include fossil collection, organization of collections, specimen identification and display design. Each year, the two schools collaborate on three dramatic productions and three dance productions. All students participate in interscholastic athletics at least one season per year.
