The Spence School

22 E 91st St, New York, NY 10128

Founded by Clara B. Spence, this school for girls was originally located in midtown Manhattan, where it enrolled both boarding and day students. Spence's early growth necessitated two relocations to larger quarters, the second of which established the school on East 91st Street in 1929. Boarding was discontinued in 1952. Drawing its enrollment from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, as well as from nearby suburbs, Spence serves a student body that reflects the multiracial and international character of the city. The school's varied curriculum emphasizes skill development while encouraging creative thinking and clear expression. In the lower school (grades K-5), the developmental approach to reading and writing emphasizes the connection between the two. Computer classes in the computer lab are part of the curriculum, and girls are introduced to French, Spanish and Chinese languages in grade 3. During the middle school years (grades 6-8), students gain more independence while also receiving the necessary support and structure. Departmentalization begins in grade 6, when girls begin to follow a more complex daily schedule. Middle school faculty also typically teach upper school courses, thus enabling instructors to prepare middle schoolers for the upper grades. The upper school curriculum (grades 9-12) balances requirements and electives, giving pupils the chance to explore areas of interest. Students take at least one term of world literature and one term of non-Western history. In lieu of Advanced Placement classes, a wide range of elective options for juniors and seniors includes many college-level courses. Spence capitalizes on its East Side location by scheduling cultural field trips to museums, theaters and other local points of interest. Study abroad and student exchange programs are available, as is an after-school program for lower schoolers. In autumn 2003, Spence established a second campus on 93rd Street for children in grades K-4. The original East 91st Street location serves girls in grades 5-12.
