The Seven Hills School

5400 Red Bank Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45227

Seven Hills traces its roots in the community back to 1906, when the College Preparatory School was founded in East Walnut Hills by Mary Harlan Doherty; to 1916, when Helen G. Lotspeich began the Clifton Open-Air School in her home; and to 1927, when community leaders founded Hillsdale School to provide an area alternative in private education. Today, the school is housed on two campuses located six miles apart: Doherty School (for children age 2 through grade 5) occupies the Doherty campus on Johnston Place in East Walnut Hills, while Lotspeich School, also grades pre-K-5, shares the 25-acre Hillsdale campus near Madisonville with the middle (grades 6-8) and upper (grades 9-12) schools. In the lower school, every child works with specialists in art, music, Spanish, drama, library and physical education starting in kindergarten. Reading and math specialists offer learning support as needed. As part of the science curriculum, children work with teachers to care for rabbits, gerbils and rats in science laboratories. Lower schoolers may engage in service learning projects and organized sports begin in grade 1. The middle school curriculum utilizes block scheduling while addressing the particular academic and interpersonal needs of young adolescents. Study skills are emphasized and a one-to-one iPad program commences during these years. Foreign language offerings (French, Spanish and Latin), accelerated math groupings, visual arts, music, drama, interest clubs, extracurricular activities and athletics accommodate individual abilities and interests. In the upper school, every student must complete a traditional college preparatory program, pass writing and computer competency examinations, and complete both a 40-hour personal challenge project and a 30-hour community service project with a needy population. Classes operate on a block schedule and pupils continue to use iPads to facilitate learning. The fine and performing arts are integral to the curriculum, and honors and Advanced Placement courses are offered in all major disciplines. Students choose from a wide selection of electives and take advantage of a highly developed curriculum. After-school enrichment (grades 1-5), extended-day and holiday care (grades pre-K-5), and summer programs (age 3 through grade 12) are also available.
