The Orchard School
615 W 64th St, Indianapolis, IN 46260
Nine local women established Orchard as a progressive school for 20 children in a frame house located at 5050 N. Meridian St. The present-day school occupies a 43-acre wooded campus and serves a student body some 30 times larger. The comprehensive curriculum integrates language arts, literature, social studies, math, music, art, drama, science, Spanish and physical education, as well as technology and outdoor education. Classroom instruction incorporates multiple perspectives and approaches while emphasizing problem solving and critical thinking. Student government, multicultural education and field trips are features of the program, and service learning is built into the curriculum as well. Outdoor education experiences are structured to support, reinforce and enrich the classroom curriculum. Learning support, speech-language therapy, assessment and evaluation, and school counseling are available. Orchard conducts an intramural sports program in grades 1-4, in addition to an interscholastic program in the later grades. The school offers extended-day activities both before and after school.
