The Lamplighter School
11611 Inwood Rd, Dallas, TX 75229
Lamplighter originated with a kindergarten and a first grade housed in an old farmhouse, complete with a barn and animals that soon became an integral part of the school's program. Today's curriculum recognizes the individual differences, needs and capacities of each student and encourages intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and creativity. Pupil progress is reported by direct parental observation through one-way windows and by several parent-teacher conferences yearly. The school operates on a modified open-classroom plan, allowing for team teaching. A nature trail leading to woods and a creek enhance Lamplighter's learning environment, and the outdoor environmental science classroom includes gardens in which pupils study native plants and trees; a greenhouse and a barn also provide enrichment opportunities for students. Peer tutoring plays an important role at Lamplighter, as it encourages leadership skills and social-emotional development. As part of the fine arts curriculum, a study of opera begins in grade 3 and culminates in grade 4, when pupils stage an original opera production at the end of the school year.
