The school serves individuals with various developmental disabilities, and students may have a dual diagnosis. The Total Lifestyles Program, the core program of TKDS, is a year-round boarding school that emphasizes education and independence. Under 24-hour supervision, pupils follow specialized plans that are tailored to their academic and social needs and abilities. Independent living skills training, vocational/employment opportunities, leisure and recreational activities, behavioral analysis and modification, social/adaptive behavior training and cognitive behavior therapy are all elements of the program. For individuals over the age of 22, TKDS maintains the Young Adult Academy. The academy provides participants with vocational and independent living skills training. Courses, which are designed to have a collegiate feel, include banking, current events, health and nutrition, and home maintenance. Active community involvement is an important aspect of the program. The school accepts the following conditions: Asperger's Syndrome, Auditory Processing Disorders, Autism, Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disabilities, Nonverbal Learning Differences, Pervasive Development Disorder, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injury.
