The Independent Day School

IDS provides preparation for college preparatory secondary schools. Classes for three-year-olds and older children through grade 5 are self-contained and reflect high standards of scholarship and citizenship. During these years, children develop a sound foundation in the essential subjects. In preparation for the departmentalization they will encounter in grades 6-8, fifth graders change teachers for reading, math and social studies instruction. The curriculum includes humanities, computers, Spanish, field trips, and a particular emphasis on reading, writing, organizational and study skills, as well as on the fine and performing arts. In addition to physical education three times each week, boys and girls in grades 6-8 may participate in interscholastic sports. Beginning at age 3, children in each grade take part in age-appropriate community service projects.
