The Gunston School
911 Gunston Rd, PO Box 200, Centreville, MD 21617
Samuel and Mary Middleton opened this school on their Corsica River farm to educate their own children and those of their friends and neighbors. For many years, Gunston continued to provide a family environment for girls on Maryland's Eastern Shore. In 1996, the school first admitted boys as day students and also discontinued its boarding division. Students enroll from throughout the Upper Bay region. Gunston offers a strong core of traditional academics and features Advanced Placement and honors classes, as well as electives in music, drama, dance and the studio arts. A compulsory, interdisciplinary bay studies program allows students to learn about the Chesapeake Bay as an ecological, historical and cultural resource. Trips to museums, art galleries and the theater complement the curriculum. Students accumulate 45 hours of required community service in grades 9-12.
