The Gunnery

99 Green Hill Rd, Washington, CT 06793

This historic school was established by abolitionist and teacher Frederick W. Gunn and his wife, Abigail Brinsmade. The school provides a rigorous, traditional education in readying its students for college. Students are graded on a nine-tier scale. An independent study program and seminars are available for seniors, and The Gunnery emphasizes the development of writing and speaking skills at all grade levels. Boys and girls may prepare for Advanced Placement tests in every major discipline. Students participate in compulsory athletics each term, although juniors and seniors may devote one term to the ski program, the outdoor club, community service or independent study.
