The Grange School
Ave Principe de Gales 6154, La Reina, 6870671 Santiago, Chile
Combining instruction in English and Spanish and borrowing important curricular elements from the UK system, the Grange employs strictly bilingual teachers through grade 5. Two instructors per classroom in grades pre-K-1 conduct a program entirely in English that emphasizes the development of fundamental learning skills. During the primary and early middle school years, most work is done in English, whereas Spanish becomes the dominant language at the secondary level. From prekindergarten through grade 4, children remain with their homeroom teacher for all classes except music, religion and physical education; more subject teaching begins in grade 5, and full departmentalization is in effect from grade 7 on. In grades 11 and 12, all pupils take Spanish, math, English, the history and geography of Chile, and physical education. In addition, boys and girls choose four subjects from this group: history, economics, social science, art, philosophy, physics, chemistry, biology, music, computer and theater studies. Some students follow the IB Diploma curriculum, while others take only certain IB subjects. Preparation for the IGCSE is part of the curriculum. The school places strong emphasis on college preparation and also maintains a career education program.
