The Ethel Walker School
230 Bushy Hill Rd, Simsbury, CT 06070
Ethel Walker opened this school in Lakewood, NJ, moving it to its present site in 1917. The founder designed the program to give her students a sound college preparatory curriculum and instill a sense of responsibility and self-discipline. Ahead of its time, the school was distinguished by its purpose: to prepare young women for college. In 1990, Ethel Walker opened a middle school division that now serves pupils in grades 6-8. The long-maintained standards of college preparation continue, and the curriculum provides a complete program in math, science, languages, literature, history and the arts, with Advanced Placement and honors courses offered in every discipline. Wellness and community service are important elements of the program. Elective courses offered in all departments produce an extensive and varied preparatory curriculum, and independent and online study is encouraged. The classroom experience offers opportunities for hands-on, project-based learning, and a senior project allows students to participate in an on- or off-campus internship to explore an academic or career interest. Athletic, equestrian, social and leadership opportunities balance academics. Walker's special-events schedule includes lectures, career panels, musical and dance performances, and weekend social activities.
