The Colorado Springs School
21 Broadmoor Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80906
Founded as a college preparatory school for girls, the Colorado Springs School has evolved into a coeducational day institution. The campus occupies a 32-acre site at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. CSS' curriculum provides rigorous college preparation, including Advanced Placement courses, in a flexible block scheduling system that divides the day into 90- and 45-minute class periods and permits accelerated study; the 90-minute classes enable boys and girls to earn full-year credits in one semester. The arts program, which includes studio art, music, photography and drama, is an integral part of the curriculum. The Experience Centered Seminar program, required of all upper school students each year, enables pupils to travel locally, nationally and internationally during the month of February under faculty supervision. Students gain the advantage of off-campus study opportunities and internships in areas of interest. Credit is offered for writing, science (Rocky Mountain ecology, marine biology and astronomy), art, foreign language and history projects completed during the program. In addition to a full complement of interscholastic sports and extracurricular options, pupils attend local cultural events and participate in such leisure-time activities as rock climbing, downhill and cross-country skiing, and hiking. Community service is part of the curriculum in the lower grades. Then, in grades 9-12, students satisfy a 24-hour annual service requirement.
