The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine

The school was founded by Rt. Rev. Henry Codman Potter, the Episcopal bishop of New York City, as a boys' boarding school to provide the choir for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. In 1964, Cathedral began enrolling male day students of all faiths. Girls were first admitted in 1974. Located in a building on the 13-acre Cathedral Close, the school offers a solid foundation in the basic elementary school subjects that integrates the arts, athletics and leadership opportunities. French, Spanish and Mandarin instruction begins in kindergarten. Older pupils take French or Spanish in grades 4-8, while also enrolling in Latin courses in grades 7 and 8. Every student attends two chapel services weekly, and compulsory community service is part of the school day. On the basis of auditions, 25 to 28 boys and girls in grades 4-8 have the option of serving as choristers of the affiliated Cathedral of St. John the Divine. In exchange, they receive a tuition stipend.
