The Buckley School

113 E 73rd St, New York, NY 10021

The school was founded by B. Lord Buckley, a professional educator and innovator. Originally located above a milliner’s shop on Madison Avenue, the school moved to larger quarters on 74th Street in 1917. After experiencing significant plant and educational improvements in response to changing times and a growing enrollment in the 1930s and 1940s, Buckley was fully remodeled in 1963. It then expanded and connected to an addition on 73rd Street. This expansion resulted in a broadening of the teaching program and the eventual addition of grade 9. Other plant improvements have followed, particularly after the 1996 acquisition of adjacent property on 73rd Street. The balanced curriculum emphasizes mastery of academic fundamentals. During the lower school years (grades K-3), boys develop basic skills in the areas of reading, writing and math. Understanding of concepts and successful application of new skills take precedence over the rate of knowledge acquisition. Lower schoolers do not receive letter grades; instead, faculty submit to parents twice-yearly written comments concerning each area of the student’s progress. In the transitional middle school years (grades 4-6), boys gain an increased level of independence while improving their academic skills and study habits. The upper school program (grades 7-9) continues to stress the fundamentals, and boys may undertake more independent research projects, assume greater responsibility for class participation and develop their abstract thinking skills. The arts are integral to the program, beginning in the early years. A skills and remediation specialist provides small-group instruction at all grade levels. All boys participate in the athletic program. After playing sports intramurally in the lower and middle school, all students engage in interscholastic competition at the junior varsity or varsity level.
