The Athenian School
2100 Mt Diablo Scenic Blvd, Danville, CA 94506
Enrolling an international student body, Athenian conducts a college preparatory program that emphasizes inquiry and interactive learning. During the middle school years (grades 6-8), group projects enhance learning, often in an interdisciplinary fashion that builds upon concepts and skills previously learned and acquired. Upper school course work (grades 9-12) stresses writing, communicational and analytical skills. The interdisciplinary freshman humanities program focuses on the history, literature and art of seven major world cultures, while the sophomore-year American studies program coordinates American literature and history courses. Athenian offers honors or Advanced Placement classes in every major discipline, and juniors and seniors select from an array of college-style humanities seminars. Upper schoolers perform 30 hours of required community service each year. All students participate in Athenian's interim program, which operates before and during spring break and lasts from three days and two weeks. The program combines local or international travel with community service activities. Typically completed prior to senior year during spring vacation in Death Valley or during the summer in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Athenian Wilderness Experience is a graduation requirement. Program activities consist of extensive backpacking, navigation, first aid, low-impact camping, technical rock climbing, rappelling, peak ascents, natural history study, a solo experience and service. Occupying 75 hilly acres at the base of Mount Diablo, the campus and nearby San Francisco provide opportunities for diverse recreational and cultural activities. In addition, the location of the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Nevada Mountains within a few hours' drive enables boys and girls to engage in wilderness experiences.
