The American College of Sofia

PO Box 873, Sofia, 1000 Bulgaria

The oldest American educational institution outside of the US, ACS was shut down by the Bulgarian government in 1942 and reopened 50 years later. Although the student body is predominantly Bulgarian, more than a dozen other countries are represented at the school. In addition to the four high school grades, the school conducts a prep year (grade 8) that provides students who need it intensive English language training. While incorporating US curricular elements, the school follows guidelines set by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education. In grades 9 and 10, ACS teaches all courses in English except for foreign language (including Bulgarian). Geography and philosophy are also taught in Bulgarian in grades 11 and 12. Significant financial assistance is available to Bulgarian citizens; however, virtually all international pupils must pay full tuition.
