Horace Dutton Taft, brother of the 27th president, devoted 46 years to the creation and the development of this school. He began as a lawyer, but a love of teaching drew him first (in 1887) to Yale, where he tutored Latin, and then to establish his own school. In 1927, he placed the school under the control of a board of trustees, and in 1936 Mr. Taft ended his 46-year tenure as headmaster. The school became fully coeducational in 1971, with girls being admitted into all grades as boarding and day students. In the ensuing years, Taft made major campus improvements, greatly elevated its endowment, expanded the scholarship program and further diversified its student body. Taft's curriculum begins with foundation courses, then broadens into a diverse and challenging selection of honors and Advanced Placement courses and equally challenging upper-level electives. An independent studies program enables selected upper school students to pursue individual creative work of a high caliber. The school also supports lecture and concert series, in addition to a program of art and historical exhibits. Taft's Center for Teacher Education attracts public, private and parochial school teachers and administrators from all parts of the country. These summer workshops are devoted to developing specific curricula and teaching techniques for Advanced Placement, science and values courses. Patronage is national and international, and the financial aid program assists many students who otherwise might not be able to attend Taft. Graduates enter leading colleges and universities. Numerous athletic facilities occupy Taft's 225-acre campus, and the athletic program, which is both intramural and interscholastic, provides competition in most sports. Student-faculty policymaking committees and an active student government offer practical experience in organizational leadership.
