Staten Island Academy
715 Todt Hill Rd, Staten Island, NY 10304
The academy, which traces its origins back to the 19th century, is the only independent school on Staten Island. Expansion began in earnest in the 1930s, when the school combined with several other private schools before eventually merging with the Dongan Hall-Arden School. By 1963, SIA had moved all operations from its original location to a 12-acre site in Todt Hill that formerly served as the Dongan Hall-Arden campus. Academic standards are rigorous and the curriculum is comprehensive in all three divisions. The lower school curriculum (grades pre-K-4) includes accelerated programs in English and math, as well as an enrichment program in science. Middle school pupils (grades 5-8) follow a developmentally appropriate program of studies. The upper school course of studies (grades 9-12) offers Advanced Placement courses in every discipline, an independent study program, electives, an advanced science track and an accelerated math curriculum. Boys and girls perform 40 hours of required community service prior to graduation.
