St. Thomas Choir School

202 W 58th St, New York, NY 10019

The only church-affiliated choir school in the US that enrolls boarding students, St. Thomas combines the English choir tradition with an American independent school academic and sports program. The Choir School's academic program features English, mathematics, history, science, art, computer technology, foreign languages, theology, music theory and instrumental study. Graduates of the school enter leading secondary schools or return to their local schools. The choir rehearses daily and prepares sacred music each year for five weekly services at St. Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue. In addition, the choir presents a concert series, tours domestically and abroad, and makes recordings. Candidates for admission must demonstrate musical aptitude, but need not have prior musical training. All students participate in interscholastic sports, some of which are played on fields in nearby Central Park. Field trips to museums and exhibitions in Manhattan round out the school's program. A five-day boarding program serves third-grade students, who do not sing in the choir but receive preparation that allows them to become full members earlier. Third graders also remain at the school for four to five weekends between Christmas and the end of the school year, including graduation weekend.
