Located in the historic center of Rome, St. Stephen’s School is a non-denominational, co-educational college preparatory school which has served the American and international communities in Rome and Italy since 1964. The boarding and day program offered spans grades 9 through 12, with a postgraduate year option. In addition to its regular 4 year program, St. Stephen’s welcomes a limited number of students, usually in their junior year, from respected American preparatory schools who wish to take advantage of our curriculum, especially with regard to our Classical Studies, Art History, Latin and Italian classes for one or two semesters.
The curriculum adapts a traditional independent school model to its unique Roman setting and fosters rigorous learning in an atmosphere of international fellowship, harmony and trust. St. Stephen’s School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools. Since 1975, it has offered the International Baccalaureate program, which is now a recognized entrance qualification for universities throughout the world. The School’s early recognition of the potential importance of the IB attests to its pioneering spirit in the world of international education.
Enrollment is maintained at around 250 pupils because St. Stephen’s believes that students are best served by keeping the student body small, thus allowing each student wider access to our first-rate faculty and campus resources. These resources include new chemistry and physics laboratories; a renovated library and the newly renovated performing arts/assembly hall and tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts; new art studios; and a photography lab, dance studio, and landscaped courtyard and terrace. In further pursuit of its educational mission, St. Stephen’s maintains a selective admissions procedure. Students are chosen on the basis of personal promise and their potential to benefit from the School’s curriculum. St. Stephen’s welcomes students of all races, nationalities, religions and persuasions.
With students from approximately 30 nations, St. Stephen’s is truly international in character. Students who have elected to follow the traditional American high school curriculum, many of whom have also participated in our AP program, have recently been accepted to North American universities such as Stanford, Macalester College, Oberlin College, Chicago, Haverford College, Princeton, and Columbia. Recent acceptances to universities in the UK include Oxford, Edinburgh, London School of Economics, Cambridge University, University College London, and Imperial College London.
The two and one half acre campus–just a ten minute walk from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum–offers students unique cultural, educational, and recreational advantages as well as frequent school-sponsored travel opportunities to other cities in Italy and the Mediterranean area. Life at St. Stephen’s is intense and enjoyable with a happy blend of relaxation and rigor.
