St. Paul's School

11152 Falls Rd, PO Box 8100, Brooklandville, MD 21022

Affiliated with the Episcopal Church, St. Paul's was founded in a Sunday school room of St. Paul's Parish in downtown Baltimore. In 1952, the school moved to its current, 95-acre campus, which includes Brooklandwood, a mansion built in 1793 by Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. St. Paul's is coordinated with the adjacent St. Paul's School for Girls, and a common center for the arts joins the two campuses. St. Paul's lower school is coeducational through grade 4, and most of the girls proceed to St. Paul's School for Girls. During the middle and upper school years, boys and girls of the two schools share many activities, projects and classes, including all electives and most language courses. The school places an emphasis on the arts, beginning in the lower school, when children take such courses as visual arts, music and dance, and movement. Middle school pupils gain exposure to various artistic media, while upper schoolers may pursue the arts through group classes, private lessons, and performances and shows. Upper school students may pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Among the graduation requirements are electives, study of world religions, one year of art and 60 cumulative hours of community service. A three-week program at the end of May enables seniors to gain career insights through internships with community businesses and organizations, and the Mountain School program of Milton Academy provides juniors and seniors the opportunity to study for a semester in a rural setting in Vermont. St. Paul's also encourages foreign exchange and travel programs and is involved in study programs in Spain, Germany and France. Middle school students take part in an outdoor education program, and upper school students must participate in 10 of 12 athletic seasons.
