St. Paul Academy and Summit School

1712 Randolph Ave, St Paul, MN 55105

SPA was formed in 1969 from the merger of St. Paul Academy for boys, founded in 1900, and Summit School for girls, founded in 1917. The upper school, for students in grades 9-12, shares the Randolph Avenue campus in Highland Park with the middle school (grades 6-8); the lower school (grades K-5) is located on Goodrich Avenue in St. Paul's Crocus Hill neighborhood. Graduation requirements include foreign language study and a course in word processing. Electives are available beginning in grade 9, and work that prepares students to take AP examinations is offered in all academic disciplines. There is a strong emphasis on the fine arts: Most students pursue drama, visual arts and music beyond the requirements. Musical instrument training is offered on both campuses. A senior speech before the student body is mandatory, and an optional senior project during the month of May incorporates self-designed study, community service and career exploration, culminating in an oral presentation to the review committee. Independent study provides students in grades 9-12 with an opportunity to study something that is not offered in the regular program or to learn it in a different way. Projects involve a variety of experiences, such as research, fieldwork, creative writing, courses at other institutions, training in music or art, correspondence study and community involvement. Other learning opportunities include a course for students in grades 10-12 in which participants receive three weeks of training in preparation for a nine-day wilderness expedition and the option to study off campus for a full year, a semester or a quarter through a number of organizations. Students are encouraged to participate in community service.
