St. Michael's Country Day School
180 Rhode Island Ave, Newport, RI 02840
Founded by Rt. Rev. James DeWolf Perry, onetime bishop of Rhode Island, St. Michael's moved to its current location in 1943 and served as the parish day school of Trinity Church for many years. In 1976, the school was reincorporated as a nondenominational independent school with a self-perpetuating board of trustees. Situated on a seven-acre tract in a historic residential section of Newport, St. Michael's provides an interdisciplinary curriculum at all grade levels. French, computer, library, art, music, drama and physical education classes enrich the program throughout. Field trips and special activities complement class work. The school also sponsors the Publishing House, a volunteer-run program in which children in grades K-4 write, illustrate and bind their own books. All eighth graders perform at least 20 hours of required community service. St. Michael's offers an extended-day option that includes outdoor and enrichment activities. All students in grades 6-8 participate in interscholastic athletics.
