St. Johnsbury Academy

1000 Main St, PO Box 906, St Johnsbury, VT 05819

This old New England academy was founded by Erastus, Joseph and Thaddeus (inventor of the platform scale) Fairbanks to provide intellectual, moral and religious training for their own children and those of the community. Since then, the academy has provided a secondary education to youth of the northeastern Vermont area through its day school and to students from all over the world through its boarding program. It presently occupies a campus of 142 acres. A comprehensive high school, the academy offers courses for students of all levels of ability, including remedial education and Advanced Placement work. In all academic courses, students are grouped according to ability. Graduates go on to attend colleges throughout the US and Canada. The academy also maintains a technical education department that offers courses in electricity/electronics, construction trades, drafting, forestry and culinary arts, each in a two-year sequence. All of these programs incorporate hands-on experiences in real-world projects; the construction trades class annually builds a house.
