St. John's Episcopal School
3427 Olney-Laytonsville Rd, Olney, MD 20832
Serving Montgomery County, this Episcopal school offers a well-balanced curriculum and small classes, giving students a solid grounding in the fundamentals. The school strives to develop students' study, organizational and test-taking skills through its standard pre-preparatory curriculum. Emphasis on reading and writing begins with an introduction to phonics in kindergarten and culminates with the preparation of research papers in the upper grades. Math classes are tracked beginning in grade 6, allowing qualified students to take algebra in grade 8. Field trips to local historical sites and science and nature facilities supplement social studies and science instruction. Spanish study begins in kindergarten, while Latin starts in grade 7. Community service is part of the curriculum at all grade levels: Children in grades PS-4 participate in an annual class project, while boys and girls in 5-8 engage in individual service work. Weekly chapel, social outreach participation and family involvement are integral aspects of school life.
