St. Christopher's School
711 St Christopher's Rd, Richmond, VA 23226
St. Christopher's offers a complete college preparatory program and provides a liberal arts education with an emphasis on Judeo-Christian ideals. At the lower school level (junior kindergarten through grade 5), teachers take into account boys’ varying developmental needs and learning styles, while also emphasizing the development of independent and critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. The middle school (grades 6-8) continues to address differing intellectual needs as it emphasizes skill development in preparation for higher learning. Instruction moves from predominantly concrete intellectual exercises in grade 6 to more abstract forms of reasoning by grade 8. In the upper school (grades 9-12), pupils follow a rigorous academic program that includes honors or Advanced Placement courses in all subject areas. A coordinate program with nearby St. Catherine's School during these years permits a broader curriculum and a wider choice of electives and AP courses in a coeducational context. Seniors have a two-week period of independent study in the spring. The coeducational Halsey Waterman Program involves upperclassmen in canoeing and rock climbing; ninth graders may enroll if space permits. Upper school pupils accumulate at least 50 hours of community service over four years.
