St. Bernard's School
4 E 98th St, New York, NY 10029
St. Bernard's prepares boys for their secondary years by providing a strong, traditional academic program. Kindergarten offers readiness activities in reading, mathematics, writing, and social studies. Creative writing, including poetry, is emphasized from the earliest levels. The junior school (grades K-3) arts program includes crafts and carpentry, in addition to music and studio art. Foreign language study begins in middle school (grades 4-6) with French and Latin; upper school (grades 7-9) students continue Latin study and choose either French or Spanish. Technology is integrated into the curriculum in all subjects. Public speaking is an important part of school life: students recite poetry and speak at morning assembly, and the upper school holds an annual competition. Other activities outside the classroom include community service projects, academic competitions and student government. All boys take part in the athletic program; intramural competition begins in grade 3, and the middle and upper schools field interscholastic teams.
