Established as a sister school to Dexter School for boys, Southfield is located on a 36-acre estate opposite Larz-Anderson Park, a campus that the school shares with Dexter. After more than a decade as an elementary institution, the school added a high school division in September 2004. The lower school curriculum emphasizes the fundamental academic areas, as well as such subjects as history, social studies, geography and science. Girls study Latin beginning in grade 7 and may choose either French or Spanish in grade 8. Additional courses include offerings in art, woodworking, music and health. In addition to mastery of content and basic skills, the upper school emphasizes the development of critical-thinking abilities. Honors, Advanced Placement and independent study options are available to qualified pupils. Among Southfield's many facilities are a science and technology center and a boathouse on the Charles River. A chapel assembly is held weekly, and girls in grades 10-12 satisfy a community service requirement: 20 hours in grade 10 and 40 hours per year in grades 11 and 12.
