The Orthogenic School maintains an affiliation with the University of Chicago. Severely emotionally disturbed children of average intelligence and above receive individualized attention within small groups. Life activities are planned after results of repeated psychiatric and psychological evaluation and staff conferences. Milieu therapy is the basis of rehabilitation and includes both individual therapy and group work. Classroom groups are small, with each student working at a suitable pace. Individualized teaching enables students to reach educational goals similar to those instituted in public schools. Sonia Shankman maintains close cooperation with appropriate departments of the University of Chicago. Children enrolled at the school may use the university's swimming pool. School is in session year-round, with home and parent visits arranged according to the child's emotional needs. Parents receive weekly reports and attend conferences to track their children's progress. The school accepts the following conditions: Anxiety Disorders, Asperger's Syndrome, Autism, Emotional Disturbances, Mood Disorder, Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Psychosis, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, School Phobia, Schizophrenia, Tourette’s Syndrome.
