Smith College Campus School
33 Prospect St, Northampton, MA 01063
As a laboratory school for the Department of Education and Child Study at Smith College, the Campus School enrolls children of Northampton and surrounding towns in the Connecticut River Valley. Classroom teachers work closely with student teachers, and college faculty members visit classes often and act as a resource for teachers as they develop curriculum and activities. Among the Smith facilities open to the Campus School are a science center, a plant house, a theater, a chapel, a student center, a computer center and an arboretum. The academic program emphasizes concept mastery and skill development in the core subjects. Special programs in art, vocal and instrumental music, Spanish, computers and physical education are integrated with major subjects whenever possible. Spanish instruction begins in grade 3 and progresses from oral language practice to written and grammatical study in grades 5 and 6.
