Sidwell Friends School

3825 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016

Thomas W. Sidwell established and then conducted this school for 53 years according to Quaker concepts of education, emphasizing simplicity, friendliness, democratic group processes, and personal and community responsibility. The school began with 11 students in a Friends meetinghouse in downtown Washington, moving to its present, 15-acre location in 1922. Under five successive headmasters, the school developed this site and added a five-acre Bethesda, MD, campus in 1963 to house the lower school (grades PS-4). The competitive academic program has strong departments of English, sciences, mathematics, languages, social studies and the arts being supplemented by extensive athletics. Boys and girls complete a 60-hour annual community service project over a 12-month period in grades 9-11; they also participate in a compulsory work program in grades 9-12. A weekly Meeting for Worship is central to the life of the school. Students of diverse racial, economic and cultural backgrounds enter leading colleges throughout the country. Taking advantage of its location in the nation's capital, the school offers many learning environments and teaching approaches. Sidwell's Chinese Studies program comprises major units in all divisions' social studies curricula, six years of language study, elective courses at the upper level, summer group trips and student/teacher exchanges with sister schools in Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. Upper school students have further opportunities for specialized study through the School Year Abroad program in France, Spain, China, Italy and Vietnam.
