Founded by Rolland M. Teel as a boarding school designed to prepare boys for the US Naval Academy, Severn has since 1958 sent graduates to colleges throughout the country. The school became coeducational in the day department in 1971 and dropped its boarding division in 1973. In summer 2013, Severn merged with Chesapeake Academy, a preschool through grade 5 school in Arnold; that five-acre campus continues to serve lower school children. The middle and upper school campus occupies a 19-acre site between Annapolis and Baltimore. Notable elements of the curriculum include foreign language study in three languages, independent study possibilities in the fine arts and an emphasis on computer technology. At the upper school level (grades 9-12), boys and girls enroll in a minimum of six courses per semester. Students participate in at least one sport each year and also must attain CPR certification by graduation. Middle schoolers (grades 6-8) take part in community service days, while upper school pupils perform a minimum of 10 hours of annual service.
