Second Start Alternative High School
450 N State St, Concord, NH 03301
The AHS program at Second Start serves children with emotional handicaps and mild learning disabilities that have interfered with their functioning in a traditional educational setting. Treatment strives to combine an individual academic and counseling program with group work and small classes. The primary objective is to develop basic academic skills, thereby improving self-image and social development. AHS does not grant diplomas to its graduating seniors; instead, Second Start works with the sending school district to arrange course credit and the high school of origin issues a diploma. A transitional employment and training program, which aims to develop positive job-related attitudes and behaviors, is available. Educational counseling and an alcohol and drug abuse program are also offered. The usual length of enrollment for adolescents at AHS is one to two years. The school accepts the following conditions: ADHD, Dyslexia, Emotional Disturbances, Learning Differences, Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
