Scattergood Friends School
1951 Delta Ave, West Branch, IA 52358
Scattergood provides a sound college preparatory curriculum with an emphasis on community living and the arts. Academics follow a block system wherein courses last for one to eight four-week blocks; each class meets for either 50 or 100 minutes. Students are evaluated on a pass-fail basis, but they may complete additional work to receive honors credit. Course work emphasizes critical-reasoning skills and effective communication in the form of reading, writing and speaking. As a graduation requirement, all students must gain acceptance to an accredited four-year college. Scattergood's February Intersession is a weeklong program devoted to classes not found in the regular curriculum. Some of these hands-on classes are taught by staff members, others by students or their parents. Pupils may also engage in community service projects during this time. Under the guidance of the Iowa Yearly Meeting of Friends, the school's daily activities include Quaker meeting, work crews and physical education. A diversified farm and an organic garden contribute to the comprehensive educational experience in this diverse learning community. Boys and girls in all grades fulfill a 30-hour annual service commitment.
