Sandy Spring Friends School

16923 Norwood Rd, Sandy Spring, MD 20860

Established as a result of community effort by the Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting, this school provides a college preparatory program within the framework of the Quaker philosophy. The school operated as a boarding and day high school until 1982, when it added a middle school division (grades 6-8). The lower school was added in 1993, when Sandy Spring Friends effected a merger with Friends Elementary School. Curricular features include a foreign language program that enables students to take Spanish from age 5 through graduation, a sequential math program that allows acceleration beginning in the middle school, and integrated English and history offerings. The ninth-grade curriculum emphasizes both academic and organizational skills development and an awareness of social and community issues. An extensive selection of courses, including Advanced Placement offerings in the core subjects, is available in the upper school. The school's spring intersession allows pupils to engage in a one- to two-week project pertaining to community service, intensive arts study, a rigorous physical activity or travel. Upper schoolers accumulate 100 hours of required community service during their four years. Excursions to Washington, DC, and Baltimore; dances; camping trips; and service-oriented projects are among the extracurricular and weekend activities.
