Sacred Heart Schools
6250 N Sheridan Rd, Chicago, IL 60660
Part of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools in the US, this school consists of a coeducational kindergarten and two distinct elementary programs for children in grades 1-8: the Academy of the Sacred Heart for girls and Hardey Preparatory School for boys. The academy, which was founded on Dearborn Street in 1876 as one of Chicago's first independent schools, moved to its current location overlooking Lake Michigan on Sheridan Road in 1929. Hardey Prep was added to the school complex in 1935. Developmental readiness is at the core of the kindergarten program. In addition to language arts, math, social studies and science, children gain an exposure to music, art, French, Spanish, physical education and religion. Beginning in first grade, boys and girls learn in single-gender classrooms. Students follow similar curricula and thematic study units while also sharing many school activities. Departmentalization begins in the middle school (grades 6-8). Among special subjects at this level are foreign language, music, art, computer, health and religion. Beginning in kindergarten, all boys and girls engage in community service projects that revolve around an age-appropriate theme. Sacred Heart schedules frequent field trips at all grade levels.
