Sacred Heart Schools

150 Valparaiso Ave, Atherton, CA 94027

Sacred Heart Schools consist of Sacred Heart Preparatory School (grades 9-12) and St. Joseph's Elementary School (Montessori preschool through grade 8). The 62-acre campus is located 30 miles south of San Francisco, near Stanford University and Santa Clara University. The school was originally established for residential girls in kindergarten through the second year of college. In 1906, following the acquisition of more land, St. Joseph's Elementary School was opened. The college division moved to San Francisco in 1930, and the girls' elementary school merged with St. Joseph's in 1969 to form a coeducational day school. The Montessori preschool introduces students to mathematics, computers, religion, practical life skills, language and sensorial training. Fundamental academics are further developed through grade 8. In the high school, students must take four years of English and social science, three and a half of religious studies, three of a foreign language, three of mathematics and three of science. At least three electives—one of which must be an advanced course in a language, mathematics or science—are also required. Students must also fulfill fine arts, community service and physical education requirements. The exchange program permits students to spend a quarter or a semester at another Sacred Heart school. There are numerous student activities, social activities and clubs. Interscholastic sports include tennis, volleyball, soccer, basketball, track and field, cross-country, softball and swimming.
