Rutgers Preparatory School
1345 Easton Ave, Somerset, NJ 08873
Rutgers Prep was founded under the colonial charter of Queen's College (now Rutgers University). The oldest independent school in New Jersey, RPS became fully independent from the university in 1957. The present-day institution enrolls students from approximately 80 communities in central New Jersey. RPS provides an integrated liberal arts curriculum designed for college preparation. The program at all grade levels is enhanced by computer science, as well as by fine and performing arts offerings. In the upper school (grades 9-12), boys and girls perform at least 10 hours of required community service per year. Enrichment activities include international study trips, local field trips and outdoor education. The Senior Exploration program, conducted in the time between senior exams and commencement, enables grade 12 students to choose a project from a menu of options suggested by RPS faculty. Explorations vary in terms of time commitment, location and cost to suit the needs and ambitions of the pupils involved. Past projects have dealt with improvisation in art; math and poetry in New York City; and the culinary arts.
