Rivermont Collegiate Rivermont Collegiate

Rivermont Collegiate, established in 1884, is a nondenominational, nonprofit, college preparatory day school for preschool through twelfth grade students. The School’s passionate and engaged faculty and administration provide its students with a balance of knowledge and skills in critical thinking, while helping them to attain a healthy sense of self-esteem. This balance allows students to develop a genuine sense of self so they may go on to become successful students in college and graduate school, responsible adults in the community, and wise and compassionate citizens of the world.

The Early School provides children with their first step in formal education. This important transition from family as the primary learning environment to a broader learning community sets the stage and develops skills and attitudes necessary for success. Through our developmentally sensitive approach, teachers weave experiences through the day that foster creativity, self-confidence, and critical thinking. The concept of readiness guides the teacher to present material when the child is optimally ready to learn.

The Lower School’s skillful classroom instructors provide a challenging daily core curriculum that includes reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and interdisciplinary topics. Discipline-specific instructors are experts in their respective fields and mentor students multiple times weekly in science, foreign language, physical education, library skills, art, music, and technology.

Rivermont’s small class size ensures that each child receives precious direction and feedback. All students are challenged at developmentally appropriate levels through the use of instructional differentiation techniques. Children who prove more adept than their talented classmates in particular subjects are provided with encouragement and accelerated content, in dimensions of particular interest to her or him.

Students in Middle School take full-credit classes in English, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, and Math. Their schedule also includes Physical Education, Health, Art, Latin, Drama, Music (band, choir, and/or strings), and Computer Instruction each year. Students work closely with a class advisor who receives weekly academic updates about each student’s progress from each teacher who interacts with that student. The advisor is able to share student progress with the student and parents. The Middle School schedule allows time for guidance in areas such as team building, leadership, and decision-making.

The Upper School curriculum is designed to provide students an in-depth foundation in the arts, humanities, and sciences. A strong base of fundamental required courses and a broad spectrum of relevant and flexible electives can be customized for each student. The result is a dynamic program, constantly monitored to assure that each student is reaching as far as his or her interests and strengths allow. Risk, rigor, and responsibility are at the core of the Upper School program–curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor who ensures that the student is on course at all times, that communication between home and school is ongoing, and that the student is receiving whatever support is necessary to achieve success.

In addition to the student’s personal faculty advisor, Rivermont offers extensive advisement in the college search and application process. College counseling begins in 9th grade to assess how they will look as college applicants four years hence and begin to assemble a list of accomplishments they will update annually. At each grade level the college advisor meets with students personally and in small groups to discuss their college search process.
