Riverdale Country School
5250 Fieldston Rd, Bronx, NY 10471
Established by Dr. Frank S. Hackett, this was among the earliest country day schools to be located near a metropolitan center. Through his vision and drive, the school quickly gained an enviable reputation. In 1972, the school became coeducational when the boys' and girls' divisions merged. In 1985, the school was significantly reorganized with the consolidation of the lower, middle and upper schools into two divisions—lower (grades pre-K-6) and upper (grades 7-12)—on separate campuses. The school was restructured in fall 2005 into three divisions, with the lower school (grades pre-K-5) on one campus and the middle school (grades 6-8) and upper school (grades 9-12) on another. Riverdale's traditional college preparatory curriculum is characterized by unusual breadth in elective courses, languages, the arts and interdisciplinary studies. Middle and upper school pupils take part in compulsory group service projects throughout the year. Juniors may participate in semester- or yearlong off-campus and study abroad programs.
