Regis High School

55 E 84th St, New York, NY 10028

Named for St. John Francis Regis, a French Jesuit who performed missionary work among southern France’s poor in the early 17th century, the school began when a wealthy Catholic widow’s looking to anonymously donate her fortune to charity met up with a parish pastor on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The widow agreed to help the pastor realize his dream of founding a tuition-free school for the education of Catholic boys. Virtually from Regis’ inception, competition for admission has been extremely intense; to best select worthy new students, the school formulated an admissions process that initially involved a rigorous entrance examination and later incorporated interviews. The present-day school, which continues to charge no tuition, serves a socioeconomically diverse group of students who commute an average of one hour each way. As transfer pupils are not accepted, only eighth-grade boys may apply. In accordance with the educational tradition of the Society of Jesus, the curriculum originally placed particular emphasis on the classical languages and the liberal arts. Over the years, developments in both education in general and the Jesuit educational tradition in particular have led to an increased curricular prominence of science, math, foreign languages and the fine arts. Course work, which is largely standard for all students during the first three years, is intensive and accelerated, with unusual latitude built into the schedule in the areas of independent study, individualized instruction and unscheduled time. Seniors fulfill requirements in English and theology, then select their remaining classes from electives in any discipline. After satisfying a 25-hour Christian service requirement during junior year, each senior devotes Tuesday mornings to service work. During his final trimester, the student may either work full-time on his service project or undertake a new schedule of electives while continuing with Tuesday morning service.
