In 1961, Mr. and Mrs. Sumner Pingree gave their home and 50 acres of land as the site of this school. Pingree opened with 50 girls and became coeducational in 1971. Serving the North Shore, the school offers a curriculum that consists of a balanced sequence of requirements, providing a solid foundation in the liberal arts and sciences. The arts are a basic component of the educational program. Students are required to take two semesters of art and may choose from such courses as drawing and painting, photography, theater arts, chamber music and modern dance. Students interested in advanced work may elect Advanced Placement and honors courses, which are available in every department. All students participate in an afternoon program all three seasons; seniors must fulfill the requirement for two seasons. Those who are not interested in competitive sports may take part in the outdoor education program or earn credit for community service work, drama, dance or an independent project. Prior to graduation, each student must complete 50 hours of service to the community, either during one athletic season, on weekends or vacations, or by playing an essential role in the organization and operation of a major community service project.
