A division of the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, Pilgrim School offers a college preparatory program that emphasizes the mastery of fundamental skills. Preschoolers, who may enroll prior to age 3, meet weekly with specialists in the areas of music, storytelling, athletics and library usage. Kindergartners and first graders receive instruction in reading, arithmetic, phonics and penmanship. The program in grades 2-6 includes English grammar, history, geography, social science and math. Foreign language study begins in kindergarten, and a foundation Latin course is required in grade 6. Art, music, computers and values education are conducted at all grade levels. The secondary school (grades 7-12) provides a traditional college preparatory program that includes AP classes. Among elective courses are dance, drama, journalism, music, choir and psychology. Grade 7 students take a quarter each of Chinese, Japanese and Spanish, then spend the fourth quarter studying the language they have chosen for the remainder of high school. Physical education offerings include group and individual sports. Computers are present in every classroom, and the school issues individual laptops to students in seven grades (including grade 1). Each year, boys and girls in grades 9-12 satisfy a 20-hour community service requirement.
